It is really shocking that in today’s situation some colleges in UP have prohibited girls wearing jeans inside campus. This is simply prejudice. It cannot be accepted. Girls should get freedom in whatever they wish to wear.

While the leadership is making hue and cry for reservation, such differences still exist. Effort should be made to give equal status to women in day to day life. Talking about high dreams on reservation in Parliament and state legislatures can wait.

So far as dress code is concerned, it is a well known truth that vulgarity lies in the eyes of the beholder. Jeans is nothing wrong. Rather it shows more strength and self confidence. The way one carries herself is important.

The current news on the leaking of MBBS entrance exam by a senior lecturer named Meena Aggarwal has really raised many question. Firstly, the questions comes on the free and fairness of the entrance tests conducted by national level ‘high profile’ institutes. Secondly, how many more Meena Aggarwalas are present who are yet to be nabbed? There may be many who are still hidden and thus, playing with the lives of the aspirants with false promises.

When a student sit for an entrance examinations, he or she has much hopes to clear. Those who study through capitation fee has no problems. Their parents can help them to buy a degree. But, those students who want to stand on their own feet through their merit has to face many hurdles, may be due to finance or proper guidance or may be due to lack of information. Along these, if the entrance exam that they appear has some discrepancies, than it is really shameful.

India has been a land where teachers are considered equivalent to God, as the phrase goes, Guru Brahma, guru Vishnu, guru deva Maheshwara, guru Shakshat Parabrahma, Tasveih Shri Guruvei Namah. This has been running in our veins since time immemorial.

So, any fraudililty on the behalf of a guru is nothing but disgraceful. A teacher is a teacher, as long teacher is a verb; but as soon it reduces to a noun, the future of the society is at stake.

Reservation for women is another way of saying; women are weak. So, I do not support reservation. Women have enough talent to achieve whatever they want by the dint of her merit, not somebody’s favor. Moreover, any position, be it political or public, should be achieved through merit, not on the basis of gender. These are all political tactics, nothing else. Men and women are equal, so why reservation?

It is in fact a nutritional source which provides 29 kilo joule per ml of energy as well as protein and carbohydrates. The home made beer also contains Vitamin.

Born and brought up in a royal family, whose lineage dates back to Emperor Jahangir....., her talent was visible since childhood. She was fond of singing rustic ballad songs during those tender years, without any fear or prejudice. Her interest was even criticized by some as they felt that it would hamper her prospects for marriage. As in those days girls from good families singing rustic ballads was not considered polite. But,she did not give up.

She was the adorable daughter of Lalji, as he was popularly known. Her father’s actual name was Kumar Prakitesh Chandra Barua. He gave her enough moral support to pursue her interest in Goalparia music in spite of all odds. Can you guess who is she?

Yes, you are right she is the Empress of Goalpariya music and pride of Asom Padmashree and Sangeet Natak Academy awardee Protima Pandey Barua. She was born in the auspicious day of Mahalaya on October 3, 1935 in Calcutta (now Kolkata). She did her early schooling in the city’s Gokahale Memorial School. Later she returned to her own native place in Gauripur and studied in Gauripur Girls’ High School.

She did learn Ravindra Sangeet from her school, but she never had formal training in music. She used to say candidly that her father’s Hati Mahal was in fact her music institute. She had great respect for her guru Bhaben Singha Roy. Actually he was the chief Mahout of her father. She was born to be a singer without any ego. It is said that her interest in music was so very intense that she used to learn and memorise all the songs sung even by the Muslim maids in her home, from the fisherman and so on.

Her talent recognised for the first time when she was noticed by Dr. Bhupen Hazarika at a jalsa in Gauripur. This shy teenager was initially nervous to sing before a genius of such international repute. But her talent mesmerized the legend to the maximum At that very instant he predicted that she can take Goalpariya music to great extent. These prophesy was established without fail. She is the one who introduced Goalpariya music with the outside world. So much so, that, the mention of the word Goalpariya reminds anyone and everyone of Protima Pandey.

She was also awarded Padmashree and Sangeet Natak Academy Award. But, in spite of that success never uprooted her feet from the soil. She was equally down to earth as ever. She maintained a very low profile life.

Even after her death she is and will be in our hearts forever. Recently, that is on 27th December 2008 her statue was unveiled at the Chandmari Swahid Udyan., to pay tribute to the legend on her sixth death anniversary. This was done on the support of the All Assam Students Union (AASU). On the same occasion the Pratima Pandey Memorial Award was also handed over formally to noted musician Tulsi Neog Ojha

Guwahati city facing interplay of bomb blasts and floods

Guwahati city is called as the gateway of entire North east. People from all over the region reside or come here for occupational, educational and commercial or legal reasons It is also important for many medical necessities.

But, in spite of all these factors government has failed to give basic security to the residents as well as visitors. The recent bomb blasts in Guwahati on the first day of New Year that is on 1st january 2009 in Birubari, Bhangagarh and Bhootnath area of the city clearly displayed the pathetic condition of security in our city.

Reports always say ’75 killed in Bomb Blast’ or ‘300 injured’. But, behind that two digit or three digits number there is unending tears, pain, helplessness, agony of many innocent families.

The blasts which took place were mostly at crowded places. How is it possible for someone to plant a bomb? This is nothing but failure of security. If you move out in the city you will find police check posts at different locations. They will check all—–right from passer byes to scooterists to bikers. Sometimes they will even check other private vehicles. If these checks are so genuine than how is it possible for the terrorists carry bombs along? Are security check ups just a belief make belief world to showcase so called ‘security concern’ for the common man?

How can that be a sudden happening? It was nothing but pre-planned by the terrorists. Has our security system failed so drastically that it could not detect such incident beforehand? Why no measure was taken earlier to detect any such planting of instantly? That is to say, there are many scientific devices which could have installed places at vulnerable or crowded areas. There may also be devices which which can easily indicate if someone plants a bomb. Even CCTVs could have been used at crowded places, not only during festivals but also other normal working days. But, such measures were not taken.

Why security of common man is so much threatened? It is we who caste our valuable votes so that a party wins to form government. We expect them to be someone who is by the people, for the people and of the people. But, alas!

You will find ministers moving around the city using hi-tech security. Even if you (as common man) is going out for an urgent piece of work, you will fall into huge traffic jam. It might be because some minster might be going along the same street. After he or she will go than only the road will be cleared for you.
So, if their security is so much important than why not our security? Are we not the one who has entitled the people in power the privileges?

Though this case is not pointed to one party alone. But, it is for all party who has come into power.

Another issue that is faced by the people of Guwahati is the problem of flood or water logging. Come shower and in Guwahati are sure to face this problem. You get ready to ‘wade’ along the water logged streets. Buses stop plying and rickshaws refuse to move. You move along without knowing when you will reach home. It is mainly because of the improper drainage facility in the city. A number of unplanned housing complexes and flats are being constructed without thinking that it may affect the drainage system. As these constructions are increasing, the said problem is deteriorating.

During this calamity, how many politicians would come down from their posh car along with the public to walk along the water logged streets or footpath? How many of them will say that they will face whatever public is facing, through thick and thin? How many of them could claim that they are ‘people’s politician’.
This issue of water logging has been the agenda of many political parties since time immemorial. But, agenda remained as good as fiction and never reality.

People suffer from such problem day in and day out. But, there is no solution yet.For us as a public, it is high time to utilize our right, that is, Right to Information. Government must answer to the people for their incapacity. It is true that within a couple of years a number of developments have taken place in Guwahati, in the context of its beautification. But, beauty without security is just like an artificial banyan tree without roots. Luxuries should not take over necessity.

Government ought to understand that it is for us they are in power. Their responsibility also goes beyond elections. We now need a leader who is a man of knowledge, wisdom and virtue—this is not only for Guwahati, but all of Assam and India.
