Dress code, Why prejudice?

It is really shocking that in today’s situation some colleges in UP have prohibited girls wearing jeans inside campus. This is simply prejudice. It cannot be accepted. Girls should get freedom in whatever they wish to wear.

While the leadership is making hue and cry for reservation, such differences still exist. Effort should be made to give equal status to women in day to day life. Talking about high dreams on reservation in Parliament and state legislatures can wait.

So far as dress code is concerned, it is a well known truth that vulgarity lies in the eyes of the beholder. Jeans is nothing wrong. Rather it shows more strength and self confidence. The way one carries herself is important.

Maybe true to some extent. But can be have a system of no codes - dress or anything else? Are we heading for anarchy?

Dress code for girls! It may sound conservative but girls should voluntarily accept the dress code.

”Men are born as such and girls wearing indecently revealing dresses would only be attracting their attention as well as that of even decent men making them also cast furtive glances at you. This would be the worst disservice a woman could be doing to men in general, and to herself in particular. Let us not make even decent men indecent by wearing indecorous dresses and T-shirts with obscene wordings.

Let us not, in the name of equality, liberty and modernity, tread the path of the so-called liberated women of the West. This may sound conservative, but it is not so. One should never deride and discard certain good things just for the reason they are age-old customs or accept and glorify anything solely because it is new and modern, without delving deeply into the pros and cons of it. ”————————————–

The above is an extract of that article whose link has been posted by you. I fully agree with the Author there. Men, by their very nature, are attracted to the beauty of women. When a woman dressing indecently, the temptation to look at her is far greater. [This is being floated around by feminists as a crime]. But practically speaking, in an environment that demands concentration, nobody has a right to distract others. The terms equality, liberty, modernity and fraternity have been misused by our generation to perpetuate irresponsible behaviour. If we go by the way feminists are promoting such irresponsible behaviour, we can aswell walk naked! All garment houses would close down and we make a complete circle - back to the cave man.

Such differences do exist and will exist even after the reservation for women. Until we don't give up the feudal values we can't hope for any change in women's position.

Gaurav, i think women themselves have to take an initiative and bring revolution. Urban men have changed to some extent and rural will also come on track.

I always believe in 'people treat you the way you want them to'.

If you will let them misbehave, they'll definitely take advantage. Retaliation to bad conduct is MUST.

Ekta,

The men also have started their revolution to counter the one-sided, biased and discriminatory revolution of feminism. It is both men and women who have to change their attitudes towards men and their rights.

I can understand school dress codes: it keeps education up front, and does not allow for discrimination or humiliation amongst different socioeconomic classes, but dress codes for only girls/women: no jeans, no t shirts, no tennis shoes, no whatever...it just seems ridiculous...It is not a problem or solution for anything.

Oscar, only sane people like you and me understands that "It is not a problem or solution for anything".

But people who are blinded by the age old customs and are orthodox, will not understand logic. They have to argue on why jeans are not right for the girls, however they themselves have left the primitive dress code of "Dhoti, kurta" and wear western attires as trousers and jeans.

I love to ignore such hypocrites and their verdicts.

I think dress code is needed for both men and women. Though jeans is acceptable for women and men alike, I do support a reasonable dress code. The term ”Reasonable” needs to be defined well. I don’t think men coming in crotch hugging jeans or women coming in tops that show off their breasts and cleavage is acceptable. When a person tries to study, he or she should not get distracted. Nobody can be allowed to sit in the class in their underwears in the name of freedom. Freedom comes with responsibilities. We seem to be misusing freedom.

Priyanka,

Women have been given more than an equal status! Women want more and more and this greed is never ending. So women need to grow up and be reasonable in their behaviour. Sorry to say this but you cannot claim discrimination all the time and everywhere. Men are as much oppressed as women! If we men start complaining about our part of discrimination, there would be no end to it.

Now coming to your article, I agree that a dress code stating that jeans is not good is wrong. Having said that, we need a reasonable, decent, respectable dress code for both men and women. Not just women. It is not fully true that vulgarity lies in the eyes of the beholder. I think you would agree with me that a lady who wears tight jeans, enough to show-off her sexy figure or tops showing off the cleavage is objectionable. There has to be a dress code for all and for occasions. One cannot go to the office in one’s underwear citing ”Individual freedom”. We are supposed to be a civilized society. Our freedom ends where the other’s rights begin. If a man walks in an exposing dress or if a woman walks in an exposing dress that causes distraction for others, it is certainly objectionable. Freedom ceases there. Hence, jeans is perfectly fine. There has to be some fine tuning done there. Otherwise, we need not have any rules whatsoever and people can walk in nude!

What about responsibilities for the freedom that we get? Does anybody care to ask that?
